The tech giant, Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has recently introduced a new educational initiative in the United States, in anticipation of the increasing interest in virtual reality (VR) education tools in Europe.
In a statement released on September 12th, the company, headquartered in Menlo Park, announced the launch of a program designed to motivate teachers in the U.S. to encourage students to explore the possibilities of the metaverse using VR technology. The goal of this initiative is to assist American college students in utilizing VR for learning purposes and to explore various ways to enhance the accessibility of educational content in the Meta Quest store for Meta Quest users.
As part of this program, Meta has partnered with 15 universities in the United States that are actively embracing immersive learning methods. These universities include prestigious institutions such as Stanford University, Arizona State University, and New Mexico State University.
Although specific details about the program have not been disclosed, Meta is focused on increasing the educational content available for Meta Quest users. The company is working on innovative ways to promote educational apps within the Meta Quest platform.
Furthermore, Meta acknowledges the growing interest in VR education tools in Europe. However, the company emphasizes the importance of governmental and regulatory support to fully leverage the potential benefits of the metaverse for everyone.
Despite facing significant financial challenges, Meta remains committed to the development of the metaverse. In the second quarter of this year, Meta’s Reality Labs division reported a $3.7 billion operating loss. Additionally, the company invested $7.7 billion in its virtual reality business in 2023, as revealed in its earnings report released on July 26th.
