Designed for the digital creators, a cutting-edge metaverse-focused headset is being developed by Siemens and Sony, set to hit the market in 2024.

Siemens, the renowned German technology conglomerate, has joined forces with Sony to delve into the metaverse with a specific focus on industrial applications. The collaboration aims to introduce a novel mixed-reality headset in 2024, tailored to cater to professional designers and engineers rather than the gaming community.

In an exclusive interview with CNBC, Siemens CEO Roland Busch expressed that the forthcoming mixed reality headset, integrated with artificial intelligence, is geared towards boosting productivity for creators and manufacturers. The device will be accompanied by Siemens’ software, including cutting-edge 3D software, emphasizing its appeal to professional designers over gamers.

As part of this partnership, Siemens is utilizing NVIDIA’s resources to create “photorealistic images,” while Amazon Web Services is also playing a pivotal role in the project. The revealed headset, which was showcased at CES in Las Vegas, is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and boasts Sony’s micro OLED displays with a stunning 4K resolution per eye. It also comes with external accessories like ring and stylus/pointer controllers for seamless real-time interaction with digital objects.

In a parallel development, Sony has been actively involved in the metaverse industry, evident through the unveiling of the PlayStation VR 2, a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5. Sony has also collaborated with Google and Qualcomm in exploring mixed reality technologies. The joint endeavor with Siemens signifies Sony’s commitment to exploring innovative technological frontiers, aligning with the growing interest of major industry players such as Apple in the metaverse realm.
