FIFA submits trademarks related to the metaverse

FIFA, the global soccer governing body, has applied for trademarks related to the metaverse as part of its “WE ARE” campaign.
Showing its expanding interest in virtual reality (VR), the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has filed for trademarks in nine additional categories.
These newly unveiled trademarks, shared on Twitter by intellectual property attorney Mike Kondoudis, underline FIFA’s growing focus on utilizing VR in gaming, fashion, and entertainment.
The trademarks aim to protect a wide range of potential online services, including personalized fitness coaching, captivating laser shows, musical performances, and live streaming of sports events.
Additionally, the filings cover the supply of virtual sports equipment and accessories for use in these digital environments.
In a previous venture into the metaverse, FIFA created a virtual replica of Qatar’s Lusail Stadium, specifically built for the World Cup, allowing fans to enjoy the tournament from the comfort of their homes.
Teaming up with luxury Swiss watchmaker Hublot, the organizers of the 2022 FIFA World Cup collaborated with metaverse platform Upland to develop unique virtual experiences and digital assets.
FIFA has also introduced a new immersive fan engagement app, Phygtlis, enabling users to relive their favorite moments from past World Cups through interactive gaming.
In a move to further solidify its digital goals, FIFA has ventured into non-fungible tokens (NFTs), launching “FIFA+Collect” in partnership with Algorand’s blockchain technology.
