The innovative ‘Metaverse Seoul’ has been introduced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, aiming to enhance tourism and provide interactive services for its residents. Seoul has become the first city to establish its metaverse platform as part of a strategic roadmap focused on utilizing the metaverse’s capabilities to promote tourism and blockchain technology adoption.
Metaverse Seoul offers a virtual environment where users can engage in various activities such as gaming, socializing, virtual tours of iconic landmarks like Blue House, N Seoul Tower, Gyeongbok Palace, and more. Citizens can even submit public documents like tax returns within the metaverse.
The initial phase of the project focuses on enabling residents to file official city complaints and documents, along with providing virtual business consultation services. Users can also enjoy gaming experiences at Seoul Plaza and explore the mayor’s office through virtual tours.
One of the standout features is Metaforest, a virtual counseling center where students can receive academic guidance anonymously. The Seoul government has invested approximately $1.6 million in the first phase and plans to allocate an additional $2.26 million for the second phase, set to commence later this year.
Seoul has been actively pursuing its metaverse vision since September 2021, striving to establish itself as a metaverse hub. The city introduced “Metaverse Ethical Principles” in November 2022, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and inclusive virtual environment. Additionally, the People Power Party (PPP) in South Korea is working on the “Metaverse Industry Promotion Law” to drive the adoption of web3 and the metaverse.
