Texas is quickly becoming a major hub for Bitcoin mining, but the local communities are facing a range of health problems, including hearing issues, headaches, dizziness, and sleep disturbances.
The clash between the economic interests of Bitcoin mining in Texas and the well-being of its residents is intensifying, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive policy solutions.
With 10 out of the 34 major Bitcoin mines in the United States located in Texas, the state has attracted numerous mining companies, such as Marathon Digital and Hut 8, especially after China’s crackdown on Bitcoin mining in 2021. Texas offers cost-effective power and access to renewable energy, making it an ideal destination for mining operations.
The state’s relatively low energy costs and deregulated power grid provide flexibility and competitive pricing, which are appealing to Bitcoin miners. Moreover, Texas has a supportive regulatory environment and abundant renewable energy sources, further enhancing its attractiveness as a mining hub.
Hut 8, for instance, recently announced its expansion into West Texas, citing the region’s “lowest locational wholesale power pricing in North America.”
However, the influx of miners has had negative consequences for the local residents. According to Time magazine, residents have reported noise levels from Bitcoin miners reaching as high as 91 decibels. The Hearing Health Foundation states that sounds exceeding 70 decibels can cause gradual hearing damage over time.
The noise levels experienced by residents are equivalent to those produced by a lawnmower or a chainsaw, posing a risk of long-term ear damage. Some residents have even received official diagnoses of hearing loss due to the noise.
In addition to hearing issues, residents have also reported sleep disturbances, dizziness, vertigo, and fainting spells. These health problems can be particularly prevalent among older residents.
